Penn-Union Insulated Power Bars & Splicer / Reducers Are Now Rated For Service Entrance Applications

Penn-Union is proud to announce that the following product families are now officially rated for use on the line side of service equipment and are fully compliant with NEC 230.46. These include the IPB, IPBB, IPBM, and IPBBM product families—each rated from 250 kcmil to 1000 kcmil—as well as the IISR and IISRB families, rated from 1/0 AWG to 1000 kcmil. All of these products have been tested and listed by UL to meet the requirements for line-side service entrance applications.

What’s New?
With the 2023 NEC code update, connectors used on the line side of service equipment must now meet more rigorous certification standards and be listed. As of June 18, 2025, all shipments of Penn-Union’s products noted above will meet these updated requirements.
Certified Compliance: Power Bars and Splices have been tested to NEMA/ANSI C119.6 and meet UL 486A-486B, Annex G, verifying suitability for line-side service entrance applications.
Clear Product Identification: Qualifying products, packaging, and installation instructions will be marked with or contain the following: “SVC” or “Suitable for use on the line side of the service equipment” to indicate service rating compliance.
Updated Packaging: Until permanent markings are added to the product itself, packaging will include a compliance notice and updated Installation Instruction Sheets confirming NEC 230.46 compliance.
Jobsite Support: To support field inspections or documentation needs, a link to the updated Installation Instructions is also available for referencing existing inventory in the field.

Where Are These Connectors Used?
These pre-insulated power bars and splices provide a high-performance, code-compliant solution across several demanding environments:
Commercial & Industrial Panels: Ideal for tapping multiple conductors in panelboards, switchgear, and meter centers.
Utility Infrastructure: Designed for secondary distribution or underground junctions, where durability and insulation integrity are key.
Data Centers & High-Density Spaces: Their compact, insulated design fits perfectly in space-constrained electrical rooms.
Renewable Energy Projects: Commonly used to combine outputs from multiple strings or inverters into a single service entrance connection.
